Few anticipated the current popularity of head vases because they were sold at the neighborhood five-and-dime stores and used by florists as inexpensive enhancements for bouquets. They are referred to as "florest ware" back then but today we refer to them as "head vases." US manufactures such as Betty Lou Nichols Ceramics, Ceramic Arts Studio, Florence Ceramics, Joseph Originals, Roseville, Royal Copley, Royal Haeger, Shawnee Pottery, Stanford Pottery and Weller were profile producers in the late 1940s and 1950s. We don't see many head vases produced by US manufacturers after the 1950s, but Japan imports continued strongly into the 1960s because of the favorable dollar/yen exchange rate and the lack of copyright enforcement abroad. Wherever they were produced, the head vases of yesteryear are beautiful pieces, very collectible, and demand high dollar in today's marketplace.
